Clemence was born in 1661. She was the daughter of William Hovell and Etheldreda Lilly.
Clemence married (1) Charles , 3rd son of Sir William Steward, 1st Baronet, of Hartley Mauduit, Hampshire, England
Marriage Licence Fac, 12 Aug. 1678. Clemence was 17 and Charles was 21 at the time of he marriage in 1678.
Children
Charles predeceased his father and his son Simeon succeeded to the baronetage.
Clemence married (2) Sir Thomas Montgomery, Knt in 1714.
Child
Hugh Montgomerie was one of five children born to Sir Thomas and Clemence Hovell, although the couple only married in 1714 – after the birth of their offspring and just a year before the death of Sir Thomas. Clemence Hovell had been previously married to Charles Stuart, son of Sir Nicholas Stuart, and her first husband only died in 1709; hence the illegitimacy of her children with Sir Thomas Montgomerie.
