John was a Private during the Civil War from March - December 1864. The record incorrectly states 1865.[3] He was with the 45th U.S. Colored Infantry.
On 22 Dec 1870 John married Mary E Mercer at Jefferson County, Ohio.[4] There are no known children of this marriage.
In 1880 John is living in Steubenville, Ohio with his wife Mary E Howard and boarder James McCullough.[5]
John had moved away from Steubenville before 1890 and according to the 1900 Census was living with his wife at Island Creek Township, Jefferson, Ohio and working as a day labourer.[6]
Research Notes
Mary is a widow by 1910 so we know John died sometime between 1900-1910, and is interred at Union Cemetery, Steubenville.[7] Please update this profile when/if a death record is located for John.
