Biography

Burial: Pleasant Valley, Dutchess County, New York. A public house was taken down in the summer of 1876 to make room for the Central Pawling Baptist Church. This building was kept for many years by Thomas Howard, and was widely known more than a half century ago as "Tom Howard's Hotel". (Smith, Dutchess County, New York page 553 (1882)

He evidently had a relationship with Mary, the daughter of Jeremiah Sabin from September 1791 until 17 December 1792 and she became pregnant. Her father brought action against Howard in the court of Common pleas in Jan 1793. Sabin charged that Howard "with force and arms & c. at Paulingtown in Dutchess County and within the jurisdiction of the court made assaults on Mary Sabin, spinster, the daughter and servant of the said Jeremiah and beat and wounded and evil entreated her and debauched her and carnally knew her impregnated her and got her with child whereby the said Jeremiah lost the comfort and service of his said daughter and servant for a long time, to wit during all the time fore said and was forced and obliged to be at great labor and trouble to lay out a large sum of money, to wit, fifty pounds in taking care of her in her sickness and laying in after the child and also that the said Thomas upon the several days aforesaid at the place aforesaid and within the Jurisdiction aforesaid with force and arms & c. broke and entered the dwelling house of the said Jeremiah and greatly disturbed him in his quiet possession and enjoyment...(etc.) Sabin sued for 300 pounds and Howard was evidently still in jail in April 1793. Mary Sabin, by Jeremiah Sabin, her best friend, [and brother], sued Thomas Howard. The court noted Jeremiah Sabin was under age. CP 19 Jan 1793, 23 March 1794. AD 13493]. This child was possibly Maurice Howard who was born 21 Mar 1793 in Dutchess County and died 18 Sept 1873. He married Matilda Sabin 24 Jan 1822 in Ohio. He was also known as Morris Howard.
