Margaret was Crow.

Early Life

When Margaret Ione Howe was born on May 30, 1903, her father, Dell Howe, was 26, and her mother, Maggie Davis, was 23[1]. She was recorded as 1/4 Crow Indian Blood Quorum in multiple documents, including this 1931 census record[2]. She was the 3rd of 13 children:

Obituary

LODGE GRASS - Margaret Ione Smith, who ranched on Good Luck Creek, near Lodge Grass for many years, wrote stories for True Magazine in her younger years and later wrote poems. She loved having her children and grandchildren around her and enjoyed embroidery and crocheting. Mrs. Smith, 81, of Good Luck Creek, died in her home early Tuesday morning. She was born in Crow Agency, a daughter of Margaret and Dell Howe. She attended St. Xavier Mission School and Lodge Grass High School. She married Frank Mullenberg in 1917. They lived in Denver, Colo., for several years, and she returned to Lodge Grass in 1932. She married Ernest Boggess Dec. 4, 1935 in Sheridan, Wyo., and they lived on the Good Luck Ranch. She later married William D. "Bill" Smith on Sept. 1, 1962, in Sheridan. He died in 1972. Survivors include a daughter, Pauline Lix of Lodge Grass; eight sons, Frank Mullenberg, Merrille Mullenberg and Robert Mullenberg, all of Lodge Grass, Wesley Mullenberg of Gold Beach, Ore., Delbert Mullenberg of Olympia, Wash., Sam Boggess of Pryor, Richard Boggess of Dayton, Wyo., and Howard Boggess of Hardin' a stepdaughter, Florence Robinson of Meistone; two stepsons, Robert Boggess of Pasco, Wash., and Robert Poor of Richland, Wash.; a brother Raymond of Hardin[35].

Memories

Grandma Margaret was 6 foot 3, and even in old age could carry 50 pound sacks of feed and cared for a garden when she lived on Good Luck Creek outside of Lodge Grass, Montana [36].

  • Maternal relationship is confirmed by an autosomal AncestryDNA test match between Kirby Mullenberg and Judy (Scott) Mullenberg, her mother (direct ancestor). Predicted relationship from AncestryDNA: Parent, based on sharing 3,429 cM across 29 segments.

Research Notes

I made special notes about language and education on the 1910 and 1920 census records, because there is family oral history that one of the grandmothers was sent to a Tribal Boarding School at a young age, and when she returned her family would not accept her back because she was "too white", and as such she was forced to marry a white man quite young to survive. Because there are 3 Margaret's in a row (daughter-mother-mother) it is unknown which of my grandmother's was the one to have been sent to boarding school. From these census records, I do not beleive it was Margaret, also because she was 3/4 white and spoke English as a child, these things seem to rule her out in my opinion.Mullenberg-4 23:05, 15 August 2023 (UTC)
