Mary was baptised in Corton, Suffolk, England, on 4 February 1728/9, the daughter of Thomas Howes and Mary Barnes.

She married George Chaston in Corton on 19 February 1751

and they had six children, of whom one son (John) and three daughters (Mary Fisk, Sarah Mobbs and Ann Prettyman) survived. She died in Corton on 12 April 1793, aged 64.
