Notes

Note N222.

They told about Roger working for Uncle Jack for $15.00 a week, and their rent was $30.00 a month. Florence said we ate a lot of beans. They were laughing about Roger loaning some man they knew $5.00, because he needed it worse than they did. Anyway he said it was a strained position because McCreary thought he was a relative, and that he could go back to the farm and starve in better style there than in Hutchison, KS. Roger said our Mother started him drinking. They were there and Roger had an upset stomach and when our Mother went to the Grocery Store with Florence, she said I’ll take a 6 pack of beer. Florence said she can still see the grocer’s look of surprise. It seemed to settle his stomach. They went back to the farm (Aunt Blanche’s) and were farming 2400 acres, when he was burned so badly fixing a gasoline stove that caught fire from the gas refrigerator. He was in the hospital for a long time. He said they payed (sic) the Dr’s with dressed chickens, turkeys, eggs, and whatever they could spare. He said the Catholic Hospital never sent them a bill, but they managed finally to pay every cent that they had owed. They sold out and had $25,000 and looked over Salem and decided to buy a house there. He first had a gasoline station and then the Goodyear people asked him to put in a parts store. (the next line is cut off on the copy). finally owned the whole block. It is really neat to see people get ahead that have worked that hard. Florence said she had not been raised on the farm, and that Aunt Blanche had been so kind to her. She had grown up in Groton as her father had the meat market there. She said she was younger but knew all the Hoy boys and felt like a sister to all of them. had had two robberies and in all had lost 40 pieces of silver that they had not bothered to replace. Her very best Tea & Coffee Service that was the heaviest and prettiest set I think I have ever seen, she had taken in the car with them down by Palm Beach, because she was going to do some entertaining down there. She had everything in that house just as she wanted it, with the help of a decorator. So it was a fun visit. I think she is the go power there. She has it all put together. I told Clair I was going to keep house like Florence when we got home. He said “I’ll bet”.[2]
