Research Notes

The following research and information is supplied by Robert Eric Holcomb (This line is part of the Mayflower Society)

JOB CROCKER, b. 6 May 1749, Barnstable, Barnstable co., MA, d. 7 May 1831,Lincklaen, Chenango co., NY, m. (1) 26 Nov 1778, Barnstable, Barnstable co., MA, ELIZABETH HUCKINS, d/o James Huckins and Lydia Scudder b. 24 Mar 1759, Barnstable, Barnstable c., MA, d. 14 Oct 1829, ______. James Smith’s “History of Chenango” (1880) and James Crocker’s “Crocker Genealogy” (1967) both list JOB and ELIZABETH’s children. Searching for original records it was determined that JOB did not leave a will, but did have several land records and censuses substantiating relationship to his children. The 1790 census from Lenox, Berkshire co., MA lists JOB by name and provides hash marks that include two males under 16 (Richard and Huckins), and five females (wife Elizabeth, and four daughters). The census of 1800 from Pompey, Onondaga co., NY (190 miles E) again lists JOB and hash marks that include two males between 16 and 25 (Richard and Huckins), one male under 10 (Daniel), and six females of ages that match the published pedigrees. The census of German, Chenango co., NY (40 miles S) in 1810 lists JOB and [son] Richard living next door to each other, which led to a search of the land deeds. The Chenango co., NY deed books show that JOB and Richard together purchased parts of lots 109, 110, 125, and 126 in DeRuyter, NY in 1804. Further deed searches provided three 1813 deeds in which Richard and his wife Aner sold the aforementioned property to JOB for $1,000, who then with his wife ELIZABETH, sold part of lot 126 back to Richard for $1,000, who then immediately sold said property to Stephen Pomeroy for $2,000. According to “History of Chenango”, JOB, after the 1828 death of his wife ELIZABETH, moved 17 miles North to live with his daughter Celia, who had married Lemuel Fairchild, where JOB died in 1831. The land records from 1829 list Huckins and his wife Betsey selling the balance of the property that JOB and Richard originally purchased.

Notable ancestors of ELIZABETH include THOMAS HUCKINS, a founding member of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Massachusetts; JOHN HOWLAND m. ELIZABETH TILLEY, d/o JOHN TILLEY m. JOAN HURST; and CONSTANCE HOPKINS, d/o STEPHEN HOPKINS, all Mayflower Pilgrims.
