Biography

Peter was born about 1751. He passed away about 1837. [1]

Peter HUFF (Oct 1751 Germany - d after 1837 Trumbull Co, OH, bur in Old North Cem, Hubbard twp, Trumbull Co) came to America with his parents when he was nine years old (1760). By 1776, he lived in Frederick Co, MD, where he was drafted and served into 1777. He was drafted again in 1778 and served about six more months. He marched to Carlisle, PA, during this service. He was at Frankstown (present day Washington, DC) for some time during his service. (Until 1776, Frederick County included all of Western MD, and Peter could have lived in any part of it. The assumption is that he lived in what is the current county. There were several HUFF and HOFF families in the county at the time, but it is not possible to say which one Peter belonged to.)

After the war, Peter HUFF lived until 1807 in Berkeley Co, VA, next to the Potomac River. He did not state when he moved there from Frederick Co, MD. In 1807, he removed to Ohio, presumably to Hubbard in Trumbull Co, where he lived in 1837 when he applied for pension, which was granted as S- 9597. Both his discharges had been burned in a fire in a cooper's shop, near where he lived in Trumbull Co. Only one son, Samuel HUFF, was specifically mentioned in pension records. Peter made his mark to his pension application, which was made for Peter HUFF. It is not known whether his parents spelled the name HOFF or HUFF in Germany.

Peter HUFF probably md at the normal age about 1775. By 1807, he would likely have moved with families of children to Ohio. He may have lived with families of daughters in OH, as he does not show up as head of a household. The name of his wife has not been identified.

1. Samuel (1795 VA - ) md Mary ??? (1806 Beaver Co, PA - ) and lived from 1830 through 1850 in Mercer Co, PA, with ch Peter M.; Mary J.; Eliza; and John W. There were likely others.

Several ch besides Samuel can be tentatively identified.

a. John HUFF md Mary A. COLE on 7 Apr 1799 in Berkeley Co, VA, with Barney Cole as surety. John HUFF was on the 1800 tax list for Berkeley Co.

b. Isaac HUFF md Isabella WELCH in Trumbull Co, OH, on 27 Feb 1810.

c. Adam HUFF was in Hubbard twp in 1820 in Trumbull Co, OH, showing 110110-30010.

d. Sarah (1796 - 1834, bur in Old North Cem in Hubbard twp near Peter HUFF) md SMITH. Ch:

e. Barbara (1787 - 1863, bur in Old North Cem in Hubbard twp near Peter HUFF) md William BURNETT, a pioneer in Hubbard twp.

f. probable son who md Anner (1788 NJ - after 1860 prob. Mercer Co, PA) and whose ch prob incl Samuel; Peter; Jesse H.; and a dau who md IRVINE.

Note: Mathias HUFF was a delinquent taxpayer in Berkeley Co, VA in 1788. While his age indicates he was not a son of Peter, it does suggest that some of those listed in Berkeley Co, VA, could be in his family rather than in Peter's family. (There was later a Mathias HOFF in Wilkes Co, GA, but there seems to be no connection.)

Samuel and Peter HUFF are not identified in Trumbull Co, OH. The numerous HUFF marriages there are in the age group to be grandchildren of Peter. Mercer Co, PA, and Trumbull Co, OH, are adjacent, with the town of Hubbard almost on the state line. The families descending from Peter HUFF apparently lived close together, but on both sides of the state line.

Huff lineage is Peter and ??? of PA, MD, VA, and OH; parents from Germany, probably to PA, thence to MD;

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Peter by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Peter:
