Son of John "Gunner" Hughes, John jr arrived from Ireland about 1820 with his uncle Joseph Hughes. About 1828 John married Abigail White. In 1851, John and his wife "Mrs Hughes" were living on 300 acres Concession 10 Lots 16 and 17 South Sherbrooke Lanark County Ontario[1], with children all born Canada. George 1829, John 1831, Thomas 1836, William 1840, Charles 1843, Joseph 1845, Robert 1847 and Henry 1850. [2] There were 150 acres under cultivation, which indicates they had been on that property for some time. Son George would marry 21 Feb 1855 to Mary Briggs, daughter of Thomas Briggs and Jane Gunness.
On John's headstone in Shelburne, his death year was 1898, but his death record shows he died 5 Nov 1902 on Lot 16 Conc 6 of Melancthon, informant son Henry of Riverview [3], a hamlet in Melancthon [4]
Also in the 1851 census p139: Pierce Hughes 27 and Mrs ae 24, CofE with Geo 4 and Thos 2, and (pts) Thomas Hughes 70, Mrs Margaret Livingstone Hughes 60 and Robert 24. Then Joseph Hughes 26 and Mrs Hughes 24 CofE with John ae3 and Wm ae1. Then Joseph Hughes 57 (1794) and Mrs 55 with Robt 25, Wm 22 and John 17. My theory (and that of Wayne HUGHES) is that Thomas Hughes b 1784 (m to Mgt Livingstone), Joseph (bn 1794) were brothers to a John HUGHES Sr (father of John bn 1807 m to Abigail White ). According to Wayne, John Sr, was a veteran of War of 1812, and originally held land Lot 9 Conc 10 of Bathurst.
