Biography

SHEREBIAH HUNT, baptized at Lancaster, 30 Jul 1758 son of Sherebiah Hunt and Deborah Wilder;[1] d. at Ashburnham, 6 Mar 1826;[2][3] m. 1st, at Lancaster, 16 May 1780,[4] RUTH WHITE, b. at Lancaster, 17 Apr 1759 daughter of Joseph and Patience (Ball) White;[5] Ruth d. 30 Oct 1794. Sherebiah m. 2nd, 12 Apr 1796,[6] DOROTHY MIRICK (widow of Daniel Garfield), b. at Princeton, 22 Mar 1763 daughter of James and Dorothy (Fairbanks) Mirick; Dorothy d. at Ashburnham, 2 Nov 1846.

Sherebiah resided in Ashburnham where he kept a farm. Sherebiah Hunt served as deacon of the Congregational church in Ashburnham from 1798 until his death in 1826. He served civic functions of tithingman and elected offices.[7]

In 1800, Sherebiah head a household of six persons at Ashburnham: one male 26 to 44, one female 25 to 44, one male 10 to 15, two females under 10, and one female 16 to 25.[8]

On 18 September 1815, Sherebiah Hunt with his wife Dorothy, in consideration of ten hundred dollars, conveyed an undivided third part of his farm to Elisha Garfield (his stepson).[9]

In her will written 12 May 1845 (allowed 1 December 1846), Dorothy Hunt bequeathed two dollars to her son Charles S. Hunt. The remainder of her estate, real and personal, is to be equally divided between daughters Dorothy and Ruth Hunt. Reuben Townsend of Ashburnham was named executor. Real property was valued at $623 and personal estate at $55.50.[10]

Sherebiah Hunt and Ruth White were parents of one child born at Ashburnham.

i DEBORAH HUNT, b. 21 Jul 1781; d. at Winchendon, 7 Feb 1817; m. at Ashburnham, 3 Dec 1803, AMOS STEARNS, b. at Winchendon, 11 Sep 1776 son of Bartholomew and Mary (Raymond) Stearns; Amos d. at Winchendon, 18 Oct 1838. Amos married second Sarah Miller (widow of Joseph Maynard) on 6 Dec 1817.

Sherebiah Hunt and Dorothy Mirick were parents of three children born at Ashburnham. Dorothy had one son, Elisha, with her first husband Daniel Garfield. Elisha died at Ashburnham in 1829. His mother Dorothy Hunt administered his estate.[11]
