Biography

Based on marriage records, William was born about 1824 in Ireland. His father was Hugh Hunter. He married Eliza Jane McPherson in 1851.[1] Eliza Jane died in 1855 in Memphis, Tennessee, United States.

William was left a legacy by Eliza Jane's Uncle Thomas McPherson in his will. From the Executor's accounts in 1857 of the Estate of Thomas McPherson, it is known William bought Thomas' trading boat and its stock with his legacy.[2]

Estate Accounts of Thomas McPherson

After Eliza's death, William was enumerated in Illinois, remarried to an Elizabeth born in Ireland. His son, Thomas P., was in the household.[3] From his son's biography it is known William moved to Jackson County, Wisconsin in the 1860's. The 1870 Census for Jackson County Wisconsin, shows William, wife Elizabeth, and son Thomas P age 16 as well as a daughter Matilda age 8 born in Illinois. [4]

The 1880 Census has some different ages which based on the fact his son and his wife were enumerated as both age 21 with a two year old daughter, it appears there is an enumerator's error. William is in the household above his son, Thomas P's household, and Thomas' in-laws are in his household.[5]. Also, William's wife was listed as Margaret.

The age on the 1900 Census does reflect that William was age 75. [6] He passed away in 1901.
