Biography

Emmett was born in 1909. He was the son of Eldee Hurd and Anna Michael.

Emmett E. Hurd, 89, Wenatchee, went on to be with the Lord on Friday morning, May 29, 1998, at Central Washington Hospital, following a brief illness.

He was born on April 25, 1909, at Estherville, Iowa, to Eldee and Anna Hurd. He was raised and schooled in Iowa, where he helped operate the family farm. After making a number of moves, he briefly made his home in Wenatchee, where he met Ruth C. Shaw. They made a move together to Missoula, Mont., before continuing on to Prescott, Ariz., where they were married in 1953. They made a number of brief moves before returning to settle in the Wenatchee Valley in the mid-1950s.

Emmett worked as a logger before going to work for the railroad as a gandy dancer. After numerous years with the railroad, he worked for area orchardists. In 1989, his wife, Ruth C. Hurd, preceded him in death. He later became assistant manager of the Vista View Apartments in Wenatchee.

He was a member of the New Life Center Church of God in East Wenatchee. He was well known as a gun enthusiast and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors include three sons and their spouses, Eldee and Sheena Hurd of Wenatchee, Mike Hurt of Fort Smith, Ark., and Walter and Hazel Harwood of Wenatchee; three daughters and their spouses, Edie and Ray McCarrell of Leavenworth, Delores Harwood of Wenatchee and Janet and Ken Goehner of Missouri; 19 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. He was also preceded in death by two brothers and five sisters.

Arrangements are by Telford's Chapel of the Valley, East Wenatchee.
