Biography

Childhood

Zachariah Hurley, son of James Hurley and Rebecca Cain, was born in Union Township, Appanoose County, Iowa, United States, 4 Jun 1858.[1] He spent his entire life in Iowa, one of twelve children, and the fifth of the known ones.[2] His eldest sibling, Rhoda, was born in Illinois in 1845.[3] The next three (who like Zack were also born in Union Township on the family's farm) were Cornelius (aka Neal), born in 1848,[4] Emma, born about 1853,[5] and Nancy, born about 1855.[6] The family of seven remained in Union Township in 1860, farming.[7] Over the next five years, Zack's last four siblings were born, all, presumably, on the family farm in Union Township: Ruel in Aug 1860,[8] Burgess (aka Burt) in Aug 1862,[9] Sarah in about 1863,[10] and Ida in about 1865.[11]

Father's Death

Ida's birth coincided with trauma. In July 1865, when Zack was eight, his father died.[12] His passing marked the end of the family's farming. By 1870, Zack and his mother had moved about twenty miles northeast of the farm in Union Township, to a tiny town of 600 persons called Agency, in Wapello County, just outside Ottumwa,[13] where they resided with five of Zack's siblings: Cornelius, Ruel, Burt, Sarah and Ida.[14] As for Zack's sister, Emma, she lived just few doors down, also in Agency, where she worked as a servant in the home of a dentist.[15] As for Zack's sisters, Rhoda[3] and Nancy,[6] their whereabouts in 1870 have yet to be determined.

Accidents

1874 Accident[16]
1870s Locomotive[17]
1876 Accident[18]
The misfortunes of the Hurley family continued. In the mid 1870s, a pair of grievous accidents befell Zack's elder brother, Cornelius. In Agency, 16 Sep 1874, Cornelius left a local bar, drunk, and passed out along some railroad tracks, one arm unfortunately over a rail. Unable to stop in time, a passing train operated by the Burlington & Missouri River Railroad[19] severed his arm, just below the elbow, almost killing him. Cornelius sued the railroad and the owner of the bar who'd served him. It isn't clear how the suits ended, but it may have been a settlement because Cornelius was hired by the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad (which owned the Burlington & Missouri)[20] to be a track walker. While walking the tracks as part of that job, 17 Sep 1876, he fainted, his one good arm resting on the rails, and, inconceivable as it sounds, a passing train severed that one, leaving him to spend the rest of his life with two arms amputated below the elbows.

Marriages of Sisters

Around the time of his brother's second accident, two of Zack's sisters married, both in Agency. Emma married William David Robinson, 5 Jan 1876,[5] and Nancy married James Marion Mace, 3 Jul 1877.[6] By 1880, Emma resided in Ottumwa with her husband and a daughter, [5] and Nancy and her husband and their two daughters resided in Highland Township, just outside of Ottumwa.[6] As for the disabled Cornelius, he in 1880 was also in Highland Township, making a home there with his younger siblings Burt, Ruel and ida.[21] As for his elder sister, Rhoda, she that year worked in Agency as a domestic in the private home of a maternal first counsin, Emma Zetta (Farnsworth) Foulke.[3] Zack in 1880 may have resided in Gibbon, Buffalo County, Nebraska, with the farming family of George and Jane Gilmore, working for them as a laborer.[22] As of Zacks' mother, her 1880 whereabouts aren't yet known.

Permanent Relocation to Fort Dodge

By about 1882, Zack, his mother and five of his siblings (Rhoda, Cornelius, Ruel, Burt and Sarah) had moved to Fort Dodge, Webster County, Iowa, about 140 miles northwest of the Ottumwa .[23] There, they all would spend the remainder of their lives. In 1885, the seven occupied "Block 46" in Fort Dodge.[24] Emma remained in Ottumwa with her husband, raising three children, in 1885;[5] as for Nancy and Ida, their whereabouts that year haven't been established.

Marriage, Children

Between 1885 and 1890, Zack and three of his siblings married in Fort Dodge. Sarah married David Caylor in 1885.[10] Zack married Elsie Elizabeth Cloud, 31 Oct 1886.[25] Ruel and Burt both married in 1888. Ruel wed Phoebe Ann Moore, and then, the following year, divorced her and married Delia Fleming.[8] Burt married Katie Fitzgerald.[9]

In 1895, Zack and his wife resided in their own home in Fort Dodge, raising four children, Zack working as a "laborer."[26] Ruel married in Fort Dodge about 1888 and in 1895, with his wife, was raising two children, in their own home.[8] Burt married there about 1889 and in 1895 worked there as a mason, raising three sons with his wife, also in their own home.[9] Likewise remaining in Fort Dodge, sharing a home, were Zack's mother, Rebecca, and siblings Rhoda and Cornelius.[2] As for Zack's sister, Emma, she remained in Ottumwa in 1895, with her husband, the couple by then having eight children.[5] His sister, Ida, presumably resided in Ottumwa, too, because she had given birth there to a daughter in 1889.[11] His sister, Nancy, was in Missouri, about 80 miles southwest of Ottumwa, with her husband and five children.[6]

In 1900, Zack and his wife of thirteen years, Elsie, and their children, Clarence, Melvin, Alice, Clyde and Margaret, remained in Fort Dodge, living in their mortgaged home at 1828 First Avenue South, with Zack working as a "day laborer."[27] Likewise in Fort Dodge in 1900, still sharing a home, were Zack's mother and siblings Rhoda and Cornelius.[2] Rael and his wife and four children were there, too, at 1712 First Avenue South, and Ruel worked as a plasterer.[8] Burt and his wife and five children lived in Fort Dodge in 1900, as well, at 2011 1st Avenue North, and Burt was a mason.[9] Nancy remained in Missouri, with her husband, raising in their home in 1900 six children.[6] Emma and her husband and nine of their children lived together that year in Ottumwa.[5] Ida had remarried in Ottumwa in 1898 and presumably was there in 1900, though that hasn't been confirmed.[11]

Fort Dodge c1907[28]
Zack narrowly escaped death in an accident that took the life of a co-worker, while constructing a storm sewer in 1904.[29] As of 1910, Zack and Elsie and their children, Clarence, Melvin, Alice, Clyde, Margie, Leroy, Orvil and Maryon, remained in Fort Dodge, living in their mortgaged home at 1828 First Avenue South, with Zack working as a "ditcher" of "tile drains."[30]

Death of Mother

Zack's mother, Rebecca, died 6 Apr 1921, age 95, at her home on North 21st Street in Fort Dodge, which she shared with Rhoda and Cornelius.[32] Her obituary acknowledges that "[her latter years of] invalidism were marked by the devotion of her children, especially that of her daughter Rhoda and son Cornelius."[32] It confirms she was survived by seven children: Rhoda, Cornelius, Zack, Ruel and Burt, all of Fort Dodge, Emma of Ottumwa, and Ida of Kansas City.[32] Rhoda's sister, Nancy, had died, but it's not known when, though apparently in Colorado.[6]

Final Years

By 1930, Zack's brother, Ruel, remained in Webster County but had moved a couple miles northeast, to Cooper Township, where he lived with his wife and a grandson, working odd jobs.[8] Later that year, in nearby Elkhorn Township, his brother, Cornelius died, age 82,[4] followed there two days later by his sister, Rhoda, age 84.[3] His sister, Emma, died in 1933, in Ottumwa,[5] and his brother, Burt, died about the same year, in Fort Dodge.[9]

In 1935, Zack and Elsie lived with the family of their daughter, Viola, in Webster County.[33] They continued to live with her, in Fort Dodge, at 1011 South 23rd Street, in 1940.[33] Zack passed away "after a short illness" on the morning of 17 Feb 1941, age 83, at his home at 1011 South 23rd Street in Fort Dodge, Webster County, Iowa, where he'd been a resident for "58 years."[34] He's buried in in Fort Dodge, apparently without a stone.[34] Among members of his birth family, Zack was survived by his brother, Ruel, who died in Fort Dodge in 1950,[8] and his sister, Ida, who died in Missouri in 1951.[11]

  1. His place of birth and parents are fairly well established by the sources, but his date of birth is not. The two best (known) sources are the 1900 Census (source 5, Jul 1858) and his obituary (source 1, 4 Jun 1857), and, at least as to the year, the census seems more reliable because none of the other sources square at all with the obituary. The last four children are all shown to be born in the same IA county but it’s illegible. Given that Zack was born in Appanoose County, it'd be so for the others, too. Birth years calculated for Rebecca, Rhoda, Cornelius and Zack all are substantially off, and why that is isn't clear.
