Joseph was born on 17 November 1811 in Felsted, Essex, England and was baptised there on 15 December of the same year, He was the son of Edward Hurrell and Phoebe (Emery) Hurrell.[1]
He married Lettice (Letty) Cock/Cocks on 30 November 1833 in Little Dunmow, Essex.[2]
They had children:
At the time of the 1841 UK Census Joseph and Letty are living in Felsted with sons Lawrence and Alfred.[3]

Joseph, wife Letty and children Alfred (18y), Rachel (13y) and Frederick (10y) emigrated to New Zealand in 1856 aboard the 'Isabella Hercus".[4] The family settled in Christchurch.
He passed away in 1896, at the age of 84,[5] and is buried in Barbadoes Street Cemetery, Christchurch.[6][7]
