Biography

Apolonio was born in 1896 or 1897 to Gavino Hurtado and Alejandra Blea.[1][2] When he married in Colorado in 1921, he used the name Frank Urtado[3] and he was known as Frank Paul Urtado for the rest of his life. He was married to Sadie Mestas (name at birth Celia Maestas)[3], and they had four sons: Frank Urtado, Galvin Buster, Levi Leroy, and Paul Gilbert.

He had originally moved to Colorado to work as a miner about 1918[2] but he returned to New Mexico long enough to be counted in the 1920 Census with his family.[4] The following year he was back in Colorado with Sadie and they lived in Longmont, Colorado.[5] They both lived there the rest of their lives.

After Sadie died in 1931, Paul married Lucy Lucero in Boulder, Colorado.[6] He died in 1939.[7]

Research Notes

  1. The 1900 US Census shows a last name of Ortega instead of Hurtado.[8] This was clearly an error on the Census. The family given names match and the house is in the same location as the 1910 Census. The ages are completely wrong, as is the sex of Apolonio so I believe that a non-family member gave the info to the Census taker.
  2. From family history I know that Paul's mother, Alejandra Blea, along with much of her family, had left the Catholic church and joined the Presbyterian Church (some famously in Trementina, New Mexico). However, the Presbyterian church records in Mora are missing a lot of information. I have yet to find baptism records for any of Alejandra's children, including Paul.
