Biography

Eliza Hurved was born in Bere Ferrers in 1866. When she reached the age of fifteen, she left home to work as a general servant in the Royal Albert Hotel in Stoke Damerell, Plymouth. The owner of the hotel was a Martha Brighton, who was also born in Bere Ferrers. She had married into the family that owned the hotel and by this time her husband had died and she was living there with her son George, who was a watchmaker by trade. He and Eliza had an affair.

In 1884, aged eighteen, Eliza Hurved attended the Petty Sessions in Tavistock in a 'Bastardy' claim against George Brighton. The claim was dismissed and Eliza travelled, in disgrace, to Kent. Her daughter Mabel was looked after by her sister who lived in Plymouth. Emma, Eliza's sister, was married to a William Henry Barnett who worked as a brickfields labourer in the Milton Regis area and a certain John William Anderson also worked in that same trade in that same place. It seems likely that Eliza and John met as a result of this connection, Eliza and John were married in 1885, when Eliza would have been nineteen.
