William was a private in Company G of the Virginia 53d Regiment. He was captured at Five Forks, VA, on April 1, 1865, took the Oath of Allegiance on June 14, 1865, and was released from Point Lookout, MD, that same day. At the time of his release, he was described as having a fair complexion, brown hair, hazel eyes and stood 5 feet 8 1/4 inches tall.[1]
