Biography

From Find-a-Grave: THE DELPHOS HERALD, THURSDAY. FEBRUARY 12, 1903 - A. F. IRICK,Sr. At 3 o'clock this morning Alexander F. Irick, Sr. passed away at his home on South Pierce Steet. Mr. Irick had been very feeble during the past few years and about ten days ago he fell and received an injury to one of his limbs. From that time he was compelled to take to his bed, and continued to grow steadily weaker until death relieved him of his sufferings.

A. F. Irick, Sr. was one of the pioneers of Marion Township, Allen Co. Ohio, and was a native of Rockingham Co., VA area. He was a son of Jonathan and Mary Boston Irick, and was born October 2, 1819. Mr. Irick was between 5 and 6 years of age when brought to Ohio by his parents, and was reared to manhood in Pleasantville. He was a natural mechanic, but early began work as a farmer. When about 20 years of age he went to Mercer Co., Ohio where he was married, Februay 10, 1839, to Elizabeth Kiggins, who was born in Miami Co., Ohio, September 18, 1821. After their marriage they lived in Mercer Co. for 3 years, then moved to Fairfield Co., where they lived for 5 years, and where Mr. Irick was employed as a carpenter. In 1845 they returned to Mercer Co., where they lived until November 1845, when they moved to Marion Township and settled on a farm about 2 miles south of Delphos. At that time Mr. Irick had a wife and 4 children, and a capital of one cent, which in his possession at the time of his death. He retained this coin as a precious memento which bears the date of 1814.

Mr. Irick rented a farm which he worked until about 1852 when he bought 84 1/2 acres, then all in woods. He worked faithfully and at the time of his death had increased the home farm to 134 1/2 acres. He also at one time owned a tract of land in Putnam Co., near Delphos, this being sold several years ago, all of this being accumlated by his own labor, assisted by his faithful wife.

Mr. Irick moved to Delphos with his wife, a year ago last April where he purchased a residence property on South Pierce Street. Mr. & Mrs. Irick had been married 64 years ago last Tuesday. 12 children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Irick, nine of whom are living: W. L. Irick, J. I. Irick, A. F. Irick, Jr., J. M. Irick, Mrs. Chas. Peltier, and Mrs. Shannon Shingledecker, all from Delphos; Mrs. J. D. Ludwig, Ft. Wayne; Mrs. S. Alspach and Mrs. David Huffman, Lima. He is also survived by his wife, 36 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held from the late residence Saturday at 10 a.m., conducted by Rev. A. O. Raber, pastor of the Presbyterian Church. The remains will be interned in Walnut Grove Cemetery, where a vault was prepared and a monument erected for a year ago."

In 1850, Alexander (age 34) and Elizabeth (age 28) farmed in Marion, Allen County, Ohio, with their children: John (age 11), William (age 9), Mary (age 7), James Ishmael [Ishmel] (age 5), and baby Arminda. The farm was valued at $300.

In 1860, Alexander [Alex] (age 39) and Elizabeth (age 38) farmed in Marion with their children: John (age 21), William (age 18), Mary (age 16), James (age 15), Arminda (age 10), Alexander (age 8), Elizabeth [Missouri] (age 5), and Dorisa [Derisa] (age 2). The farm was valued at $2,800 and the family had $600 in personal property. The older boys helped their father work the farm.

In 1870, Alexander (age 50) and Elizabeth (age 49) farmed in Marion with their children: William (age 28), Arminda [Araminda] (age 20), Elizabeth [Elisabeth] (age 14), Dorisa (age 12), Jackson (age 8) and Eliza (age 6). The farm was valued at $3,000 and the family had $1,160 in personal property. William had $150 in personal property.

In 1880, Alex (age 60) and Elizabeth (age 59) farmed in Marion with their children: Dorisa (age 22), Jackson (age 18), and Eliza (age 16). John Ellis (age 18) lived in the household and worked as a farmhand. Dorisa and Eliza both worked as domestic servants.

In 1900, Alexander (age 81) and Elizabeth (age 79) farmed in Marion with widowed daughter Eliza Irick Tucker (age 36) and granddaughters: Sallie W. Tucker (age 15) and Lizzie Tucker (age 13).
