POW of Japanese on Java. Transferred to Changi camp Singapore then eventually onto the Japanese "Hell Ship" Tamahoko Maru, 18 June 1944.
Tamahoko torpedoed by USA sub Tang despite knowing POW were on board. Robert died at sea.
On the afternoon of 25 June 1945, the 212 survivors of Tamahoko Maru arrived at Nagasaki harbour. On the morning of 9 August 1945, they would experience the explosion of an A-bomb dropped over Nagasaki.
