Section cO South plot 1234 Burial No. 47159
Selina's age is shown as 60 in the 1901 census... it should be 71.
Selina Hastings Grant (nee Ison) was Allan Grant's grandmother. Born in 1830, Leicester she was the daughter of John and Elizabeth Ison. The family were living in Grosvenor St in 1841. Selina marriedWilliam Grant (born 1825) on 4th March 1851. William was a Railway Inspector. They lived in Leicester and together had three children, Laura Anne, Walter William and William.
Unfortunately William J Grant lived for less than six years after the marriage, leaving Selina to raise their family alone. William junior was to become Allan Grant's father.
Selina seems to have been an ambitious person. She was a dressmaker and appears as such in several of the census returns. She is also listed in several directories of Leicester. Her children did well– Laura became a Professor of Music, Walter was a Railway Clerk and William a School Attendance Officer.
As well as being a dressmaker Selina is shown as letting appartments at 283 Belgrave Road, Leicester, in Wrights Directory of Leicester 1886. This was actually Belgrave Gate between Melton Street andWillow Street and would have been almost opposite Painter Street but a few steps nearer to the City centre. The Belgrave Flyover slip road now covers the site. I have however managed to find a photograph of the next door building some 17 years after Selina was living there! This was very near to the old LNER Belgrave Road Station – maybe Walter had worked there.
After her children had grown up and had left the family home, in 1891 Selina was living with her sisters Elizabeth and Francis (who had both remained single) at 4 Arnold St, Leicester. In 1901 Selinawas in Leicester Union Workhouse where she died in 1902. Her two sisters were still living at Arnold Street - what happened?
Selina purchased plot No. 1234 at Welford Road Cemetery some time before 1893 and saw her daughter Laura Ann Turner buried there in that year. Selina was then buried there in 1902 followed by her sisters Elizabeth Ison in 1905 and Frances May Hastings Ison in 1909. The final family buried there was her son William Grant in 1901. The plot was then marked as 'full' so William's wife Emma (nee Willis) was buried in a plot a hundred yards or so away.
Selina's middle name 'Hastings' was given to her by her parents who were following a tradition whereby families with a direct descendant of the noble Hastings family would give their children a middlename of 'Hastings' - was it as a status symbol or pride? Robert Hastings Grant.... hmmm yes I like the sound of that. I have found three Selina Hastings Ison's so far... Henry is also a popular namein Hastings-related families.
