James Ivey was born on 20 Apr 1816 in Camborne, Cornwall, England. He was baptrized on 15 May 1816 in Camborne, Cornwall, England.

James married Mary Ann Eudey about 1843. Mary Ann was married first to Thomas Treloar on 12 October, 1837 in Camborne, Cornwall. They had two children, one died young and the other was a daughter named Caroline Victoria.

James and Mary Ann's first child was born in Camborne in 1844:

James and Mary Ann emigrated to America and settled in Lancaster, Wisconsin in 1845. The other children born in America were:
