Mary (Jackson) Johnston migrated from United Kingdom to United States.
Mary was born October 7, 1837[1] in St. Giles, Orton, Cumberland, registered in Carlisle in the December quarter. (See Research Notes.) She was the daughter of Joseph Jackson and Jane Chambers.[2][3] Mary was baptised November 8, 1837 in St. Giles.[4]
Mary and her family left Liverpool on the barque Mersey, arriving in New York on October 14, 1840. The family was headed to Truxton, New York with three boxes. They were also travelling with Elizabeth Chambers, a sister of Mary's mother.[5]
The family then moved to Summit, Wisconsin where Mary's father farmed.[6] In August, 1850 Mary's mother died.[7] Her father travelled back to New York after the death and remarried Eleanor Gilkerson in 1854.[8] He and Eleanor had two sons, much younger than Mary.
Mary must have continued her education as on June 9 of 1860 Mary was living with her family in Summit, Wisconsin and was working as a school teacher.[9] By June 30 she was living with her stepmother's brother in Genoa, Illinois and was attending school.[10]
Most likely Mary stayed in Illinois, as on February 24, 1869 she married William Johnston (1838-1910), from Olmstead, Minnesota, in Rockford, Illinois.[11][12] The couple moved to William's home in Olmstead, Minnesota.[13]
The couple's first child was born in January, 1872 and three more children followed.
In 1880 the family was farming in Kalmar township. William's mother Mary was also living with them.[17] In 1885 Mary and William and their four children were living in the village of Byron in Olmstead county.[18] In 1895 they were still farming in Byron.[19]
In July of 1895 Mary's daughter Cora died of rheumatic fever.[15]
In 1900 Mary (59) and William (62) were still farming in Byron. Their three remaining children, Clarence J. (29), William W. (24), and Jennie E. (22) were still living at home, although son William was a student. A laborer, James Rollinston from England, was also living with the family.[20] However, by 1905 only their daughter Jennie was living at home on the farm with Mary and William.[21] And, in 1910 only William and Mary were living in the household. William was no longer farming, but living on his own means. They owned their house freehold.[22]
In December, 1910 Mary was widowed.[23] After William's death Mary continued to live in Byron. In 1913 her son Clarence lived with her.[24] The 1915 directory of farmers for Olmstead County showed Mary as a farmer owning land in sections 22, 23, and 32 in the township of Kalmar. She owned 326.3 acres of land valued at $9830. Her postal address was Byron, Minnesota.[25] Mary's son Clarence was living with her in 1915[26] and in 1917.[27]
In 1920 both of Mary's divorced children, Clarence and Jennie were living with her. Clarence was farming and Jennie was working in the telephone office. (Son William was a druggist in Montana.)[28]
On June 27, 1920 Mary, who had been suffering from senility, died of valvular heart disease.[1][29][30] Mary was buried in the family plot in the Byron Cemetery.[31]
Mary died intestate so her estate went through probate with her son Clarence serving as executor. Mary left rather a substantial estate, leaving land and her personal estate valued at $20,128.56 for her three surviving children to share. At the time of her death she held a homestead in Olmsted County, and land in Dodge County described as "an undivided 1/3 of The south half of the south east quarter and the north east quarter of the south east quarter of Section No. 36 in Township No. 107 north of Range 16 west of the Fifth Principal Meridian" valued at $4000. Her furniture and household goods were valued at $250. She also held investments listed as:
John Miller note and mortage $10 000 at 5 1/2 % valued at $10 000
Oscar Distad note and mortgage $2300 at 6% valued at $2300

Mary provided a different year of birth on nearly every document. She certainly lost years of age over time, but consistently stated she was younger than her husband. However, her baptism date of November 8, 1837 means she was most likely born in 1837.[4] Her death record states her birthdate as October 7, 1839.[1] A baptism almost exactly one month after birth was very common in England so the most likely scenario is her birthday being October 7, 1837.
