Biography

Genealogically Defined

Early Years

Willie was the 8th child born to John Jackson and Ella Goodshaw.[1] (See Research Note i below)

Willie lived and worked on his father's farm for some time in Pawlet, Vermont.

He and his siblings grew up on the farm in Hebron owned by his parents near the turnpike.[2] and he went to school while helping out on the farm.

Marriage and Family

Willie's first marriage occurred on 13 January 1910. His bride was Margaret (Harrington) Jackson (Martha) of Washington County, New York. They may have met each other at one of the dances often held in Pawlet. They were married by the Rev. George Williams, a Baptist clergyman, in West Pawlet, Vermont.[3] The entire Jackson family moved to Rupert Mountain Road in Pawlet, Vermont, where his father, John, owned a large farm. For a time Willie and Martha lived on the Jackson family farm where Willie was a farm laborer. His brother, Orla Jackson, (or Orley), and his family lived and worked on an adjacent farm.[4]

A daughter, Beulah (Jackson) Glaze, was born on August 5, 1913, in Rutland County, Vermont.[5] This would be the couple's only child. There were problems in the marriage and Willie and Margaret soon divorced.

End of First Marriage
William stayed single for several years. His World War I Military Registration card shows that he is divorced and with a child. He did not claim any military exemption at all for having a child.[6] (See Research Note ii below)

Scandal
The town of Pawlet, Vermont must have been turned on its ear as in October of 1918, a Miss Henrietta LaBatt, also of Pawlet, filed two suits in Rutland County Court against William Jackson. One claimed 'Breach of Promise' as she alleged that William had promised to marry her and then backed out of the agreement. Subsequently, Miss LaBatt also sued William for the support of a child.[7]

For a while, William boarded at a farm owned by John Connolly (Conley?) and worked as a farm hand for him. This farm was adjacent to several farms owned by Jackson family members.[8]

Second Marriage

William Hughes Jackson and Henrietta (Greene) LaBatt were joined in marriage on June 1, 1924, just a few weeks following the birth of their second child.[9] The couple first resided in Hebron, New York, and then moved to Rupert, Vermont. They remained close to family and to each other. During the next few years, the couple would foster a daughter. Additionally, William would adopt Henrietta's three daughters by her first marriage.[10]

Death and Burial

In late August 1944, William became ill and was hospitalized at the hospital in Bennington, Vermont. He died on September 1, 1944.[10] He was laid to rest in the Rupert Street Cemetery in Rupert, Vermont[11]

Research Notes

i. All official records state his birth year as 1895, except for the town clerk's copy of the marriage record for his first marriage. This record, and the census of 1910, show that Willie was 18 years of age at the time of this marriage (1910). If a birth date of 1895 is true, then Willie would have been 14 in January 1910.
ii. An official record for this divorce has not been found as of 2019. Family members may or may not own a copy. It is hoped that there are records with the County of Rutland, Vermont.
