Biography

Brigadier Oliver David Jackson DSO OBE was born on 24th November 1919 in Wandsworth, Surrey, England, United Kingdom. He was the younger son of Australians (later Major General) Robert Jackson and Edith Vautin, [1] briefly stationed in England following The Great War. The family returned to Australia in 1920.

2/25th Infantry Battalion; 1st Battalion RAR; Australian Army Training Team Vietnam; 1st Australian Task Force; 1st Division; Eastern Command

After graduating from Royal Military College, Duntroon, he was commissioned as a Lieutenat in the Royal Australian Infantry. On 12th December 1939 he transferred to the Second Australian Imperial Force (AIF) and was posted to the 2/25th Infantry Battalion. [2]

David married Dorothy Honor McLeish or MacLeish in 1944 in Woollahra, New South Wales. [3]

Following the war, he transferred to the freshly named Australian Regular Army. David served with the 1st Battalion Royal Australian Regiment in South Korea from January to March 1956. [4] David was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the New Year's Honours 1959 as a Colonel in the Staff Corps. [5] Following sixteen months with the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam from January 1965 to May 1966, he was appointed commander 1st Australian Task Force, overseeing all Australian Army operations in South Vietnam. [6] In January 1967 he was posted to Canberra, as Chief of Staff 1st Division. David was appointed Companion of the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) in January 1967 for his work as commander 1st Australian Task Force. [7] In 1969 he served with Headquarters Eastern Command, New South Wales.

David retired from the Army in 1974 with the rank of Brigadier, taking to sailing and gardening in Sydney. His older brother, Donald, also attained the rank of Brigadier, retiring in 1968. David later retired to Burradoo, near Bowral in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales.

Aged 84 years, he passed away on 7th May 2004 in Burradoo.
