Maud was born in 1916, under a false surname her stepfather had used to enlist in WW1 without parental permission. Her biological father is said to have already died in Europe in WW1.[1]
After emigrating to Australia with her mother her stepfather's true name was adopted, and she married Albert Nicholls in 1946.[2]
