Humphrey was born on 29 March 1912 in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, son the Rev. W. B. Jacques, Rector of Burton Latimer, of Orlingburv Hall, Northampton. [1][2]
Humphrey was educated at Harrow School.[3]
Humphrey's marriage to Verity Mabel Lindsay Reade was at St. Mary's, Astbury on 8 April 1939.[4] The bride was given away by her uncle, Mr. Crawford J. Antrobus, The bridesmaids were Elizabeth Irons, Pamela Hall, Penelope Bolton, Angela Cross (cousin of the bridegroom) and Mary Hill (niece of the bridegroom). Mr. Geoffrey Cross, cousin of the bridegroom, was best man. A reception at Eaton Hall was attended by 250 guests, and later the bride and bridegroom left for the South of France.[5]
They had two children, Christabel b. 1940 and Anthony b. 1949.
Humphrey was commissioned as a 2nd Lieut in the Territoial Army, Royal Artillery on 15 July 1939[3]. He served during WW2 and reached the rank of Major. He was awarded the MBE in recognition of gallant and distinguished services in Italy - in his case, the arduous task of Secretary of the War Establishments Committee[6][7]
He left his wife living with her mother-in-law. In the 1939 register his wife Verity (age 20), Paid Secretary & Unpaid Domestic Duties, was the married head of household in Severn Lawn, Arley, Kidderminster, Worcestershire, England.[8]

After the war, he went to Christ Church, Oxford, and Wells Theological College with a view to taking Holy Orders. He was ordained as a deacon in the Church of England by the Bishop of Bath & Wells in Wells Cathedral on St Thomas' Day, Sunday 21 Dec 1947 and assigned as curate of Beckington and Orchardleigh with Lullington.[9] A year later on Sunday 19 December 1948 he was ordained priest.[10]
He was Vicar of Portesham, Abbotsbury & Langton Herring in Dorset from 1954 until his retirement in 1981.[11].
He continued to serve in the Territorial Army as a Chaplain to the Forces until his retirement in 1962 and was awarded the Territoral Decoration.[12]
Humphrey died on 29 April 1993 in Buckhorn Weston, Gillingham, Dorset[13]. His funeral was held on 4 May 1993 at Lullington near Frome, Dorset.[14] His estate passed probate on 18 August 1993 in Liverpool.[15]
