Biography

Edmund was born about 1850. He passed away in Mosman, New South Wales, Australia during 1936.

Edmund married Caroline Tinley Gillard in Norwood, South Australia on 10 December 1876.[1] The following marriage notice was published in the newspaper, The South Australian Advertiser, on 18 December 1876:[2]

JAFFREY— GILLARD — On the 10th December at the residence of the bride's father, by the Rev. Thos. Hope, Edmund Alexander Jaffrey, Bank of Australasia, Aberdeen, Burra, to Caroline Tinley, eldest daughter of Joseph Gillard, of Sylvania, Norwood.

Edmund died in Mosman, New South Wales on 10 June 1930 at the age of 86 years. The following death notice was published in the New South Welsh newspaper, The Sydney Morning Herald, on 11 June 1936:[3]

JAFFREY. - June 10, 1936, at a private hospital, Mosman, Edmund Alexander Jaffrey, late of Western Australia and South Australia, aged 86 years.

Edmund's remains were cremated at the Northern Suburbs Crematorium in North Ryde, New South Wales on 11 June 1936.[4]

The following obituary was published in the Western Australian newspaper, The Mirror, on 13 June 1936:[5]

Advice was received yesterday by Mr. Guy Jaffrey that his father, Edmund Alexander Jaffrey, for many years a resident of Constitution Street, East Perth, passed away at the residence (sic) of his son, Percy, in Raglen Street Mosman Bay, Sydney. Deceased was 86 years and was a very close friend of Adam Lindsay Gordon, Australia's great poet. In his early youth the late Mr Jaffrey travelled with cattle from Cooks (S.A.) to Queensland, he being one of the first to make the overland journey. For many years he. was the manager of the Bank of Australasia in Adelaide, and upon retiring took up accountancy work. He recently sold his property in Western Australia and went upon a visit to New South Wales to see his sons.
