By Gene Thibodeaux
A common surname in Church Point is Jagneaux; anyone outside of the area bearing this name can always trace it back to the northeastern Acadia Parish town. That is because all Jagneaux’s descend from one man, Pierre Alexis Jagneaux.
There is much mystery involving Pierre Alexis Jagneaux. Family tradition states that he was a French sailor who jumped ship in New Orleans and somehow made it to southwestern Louisiana. What is known is that he was in Lafayette on May 10, 1828, where he married Marguerite Benoit, the daughter of Jean Baptiste Benoit and Helene Roger. Pierre Alexis gave his parents’ names as Mathurin Jagneaux and Jacquette Jagneaux and said he was from Nantes, France. It is a little strange that his parents both bore the same last name, but more on that later in the article.
Pierre Alexis Jagneaux and Marguerite Benoit bore two children before Marguerite’s untimely death on Jan. 20, 1835, namely: 1. Pierre- bn. Aug. 7, 1830, d. Aug. 30, 1891, m. Dec. 1, 1851 to Marie Amelia Richard. 2. Marcelite- bn. Mar. 23, 1833, d. Apr. 5, 1837.
The young widower now had two young children to care for. He solved this problem by the most common method; he remarried. His new bride was Josephine, the daughter of Jean Savoy and Modeste Prejean, whom he married at Grand Coteau on Jan. 2, 1837. At least ten children resulted from this union: 1. Marie Adelle- bn. Jan 18, 1838, d. Jun. 10, 1841. 2. Marie Odieska- bn. Jun. 5, 1840, d. Jul. 15, 1840. 3. Jean Edgar- bn. Jun. 24, 1841, d. Oct. 8, 1843. 4. Marie Onezia- bn. Aug. 6, 1843, m. Mar. 28, 1863 to Sevene Babineaux. 5. Alexis- bn. Apr. 26, 1845, m. Nov. 22, 1865 to Adelysa Bourque. 6. Marie Alexima- bn. Sep. 1, 1847, d. Dec. 29, 1868, m. Apr. 3, 1866 to Ignace Breaux. 7. Zuline- bn. Apr. 6, 1850, m. Jan. 15, 1872 to Julien Comeau. 8. Marie Marguerite- bn. Jun. 18, 1853, m. (1st) Feb. 5, 1872 to Edmond Roger and (2nd) Feb. 17, 1887 to Olin Matte. 9. Desire- bn. Dec. 25, 1855, m. Nov. 22, 1876 to Marguerite Aspasie Roger. 10. Theodore- bn. Jan. 11, 1862, m. Nov. 4, 1884 to Julia Lejeune. Pierre Alexis Jagneaux died in Church Point on Dec. 14, 1884.
It is here that most genealogists run into a brick wall. A few years back, Alexis Jagneaux, Jr. of Church Point vacationed in France and visited his ancestral homeland, Nantes. He returned with a bundle of copies of ancient records from the archives at Nantes. He kindly shared them with me. I then wrote to the Nantes Archives seeking even more information and received additional copies of records. From these records, we are now able to extend the Jagneaux (or Jagueneau, as it is spelled in France) line back for a few additional generations.
Pierre Alexis Jagneaux was born on Jul. 20, 1807 in Nantes, France. He was illegitimate and no father was listed. I believe Pierre Alexis lied when he gave his father’s name as Mathurin Jagneaux at the time of his marriages to hide his illegitimacy. The alternative raises other questions that can never be proved until DNA testing can be performed on long-dead bodies. I crossed off Mathurin Jagneaux from my genealogy and left a question mark in his place.
What is sure is that his mother’s name is Jacquette Jagneaux, the widow of Mathurin Douillard. Mathurin and Jacquette were married on Dec. 18, 1787 and Mathurin died on Oct. 11, 1799, eight years before Pierre Alexis’ birth. Jacquette Jagueneau never remarried and died on Mar. 27, 1829. Mathurin Douillard and Jacquette did have at least one child together. Marie Mathurine Douillard was born Apr. 8, 1788.
Jacquette Jagueneau was born on Dec. 15, 1769 in Nantes. Her parents were François Jagueneau II, a miller by trade, and Marie Prodet. They were married on Apr. 30, 1764 and the wedding legitimized a son, François III. The child had been baptized five days earlier, on Apr. 25.
Marie Prodet was born around 1742 in Chantenay, France and died on Nov. 25, 1771 in Nantes. Her parents were Toussaint Prodet and Marie Derennes. She also had a sister named Jacquette Prodet.
François Jagueneau II was the son of François Jagueneau I and Jeanne Daviau and was baptized at Nantes on Jul. 29, 1740. In various papers are mentioned Francois II’s brothers, Mathurin, Laurent and Pierre.
I am sure that more genealogical information on the Jagneaux family can be mined from the Nantes Archives and hope that some future researcher can shed more light upon this pioneer Acadia Parish family.
