Biography

Irene Clarabel James was born at Calais, Maine, 14 May 1922, the daughter of Hosea Stevens James and Lila Bernice Brown; ^{[1] [2] [3]} m at Bangor, Maine, 30 Oct 1942, Henry M. WEARE – Irene James Shepard, 91, died Sunday, April 13, 2014, from pneumonia at Pleasant View Rehabilitation Center, Concord. She was born in Calais, Washington County, Maine, May 14, 1922, and raised in nearby Woodland, Maine (Baileyville). Irene had been, at 50 years, the longest-term living parishioner of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church of Hopkinton, where she served as a member of the Vestry; the Alter Guild; and the St. Andrew's choir from 1963 until 2013, many of those years as Choir Director. Irene was a graduate of Oak Grove School, Vassalboro, Maine and earned a BA at the University of Maine, Orono. She was a Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star; a founder of the Piece Makers Quilting Guild; a vice-president of the Hopkinton Women's Club; a member of the Hopkinton Republican Woman's Club; and an accomplished seamstress and quilter. Irene was active in local, state, and national politics. She served five terms in the NH State Legislature as a Representative of the Town of Hopkinton. Irene taught French for a number of years at Symonds Free School in Warner. She lived in Hopkinton until 1985, then moved to nearby Weare. She is survived by a son, four grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at Wednesday, May 14, at 11 a.m. St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Hopkinton.
