Dr. Robert Evan James, M.D. was the third child of Evan and Elizabeth McHenry James. He was the father of William McHenry James. Dr. R. E. James, M.D. graduated from two medical colleges; The University of Pennsylvania Medical College (Penn) and Jefferson Medical College. He practiced medicine in and around Centreville, PA.

Dr. James was a Democrat and a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives from 1836-1837. He declined a bid for re-election. He was a member of the Baptist Church.

Dr. James married Caroline, daughter of Jacob and Marie Kindtz Dieterich. The children of Dr. Robert E. and Caroline (Dieterich) James:

(1) Frances Minerva, b. Aug. 20, 1839 married Dr. Hiram Long of Sunbury, PA.

(2) Mary Elizabeth, b. Aug. 31, 1841 married Truman H. Purdy of Sunbury, PA.

(3) William McHenry, b. Apr. 12, 1844 married Carrie C. Criswell. He attended Lewisburg University in 1861 and left to volunteer for the Civil War. He served in Co. C., 47th., Reg., PA., Vol., Infantry.

(4) Jacob Dieterich, b. April 15, 1846-d. March 1907 married Lena Irene Clement.

(5) Robert Evan James, Jr., esq., an attorney who lived in Easton, PA. and was the President of The Easton Trust Company. He married Anna Heller. They had a son Robert E. James, III, esq. who was an attorney as well.
