Biography

Miles James was born in 1829. He was married to Sarah about 1853, she is only mentioned with the surname of James.[1][2][3][4]

Children

  1. Thomas James born 1854, wasn't on the1870 census
  2. John James born 1855 died after 1900, married Sarah Push[3][5]
  3. Ella Frances James born 1857, she is 13 years old on 1870 census
  4. Edith James born 1861, she is 9 years old on the 1870 census.
  5. Miles James born 1863 (he was 5 months old when sister Edith was 2 years old) He isn't on the 1870 census.

Military Service

1st Sgt Miles James served in the United States Civil War.

Miles James was awarded the Medal of Honor.

He served with the 46th US Colored Troops during the American Civil War and was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his exemplary actions.[6][7][8]

Medal of Honor Citation

Having had his arm mutilated, making immediate amputation necessary, he loaded and discharged his piece with one hand and urged his men forward; this within 30 yards of the enemy's works.[6]

He died in 1871.[9]
