Mads married his bible class teacher. He was a sawmiller for many years before going dairy farming, and later farming wheat barley and oats. He left the land during the depression and returned to sawmilling working as a rouse about living on the premises during the week and returning home to his family on the weekends to the home they had moved to in Carterton.
Mads is buried Kelvin Grove Cemetery Palmerston North Section M block 8 plot 59.
