John Jernigan was born about 1664 in Nansemond County, Virginia Colony. He was the son of Thomas Jernigan, Sr. (the immigrant) and Ann Elizabeth Arlington (uncertain). He passed away on 12 January 1733/34 in Bertie County, North Carolina. (His will was dated 10 January 1733/4 and presented in Bertie County Court at the February 1733/4 session.[1]
Children of John Jernigan and wife Temperance were Henry, Thomas, George, David, and James Jernigan. Some sources omit Henry as a son,[2][3] but he is named as son in John's will.

Item I give to my Son Henry Jernagan My Plantation to the Branch;
Item I Give to my Sons Thomas and George Jernagan two hundred Acres of Land over the Branch be it more or Less;
Item I Give to my Son David Jernagan Twenty Shillings;
Item I Give to my Son James Jernagan one hundred Acres of Land that is Over Attesky [Cattawasky] Swamp;
And all the rest and Residue of my Personal Estate Goods and Chatels whatsoever I do give and Bequeath unto my Loving Wife Temperance Jernagan and Benjamin Hill to be Eaqly Divided full and sole Executors of this my Last will and Testament ... the 10th day of January 1733. 1716 John Jernigan purchased 200 acres north side of Catawatsky Meadows in Chowan County, North Carolina on 5 January 1716, and was identified in the deed as a resident of Nansemond.[2]
1718 "In 1718 John Jernigan patented 400 acres in Chowan adjacent to land granted the same day to Thomas Jernigan; in 1720 he was granted an additional 640 acres in the same locality; ..."[1]
1720 On 11 April 1720 Thomas Jernigan and John Jernigan were listed on the Roster of Capt. Robert Paterson's Company, Chowan County, "from Meherrin Creek to Meherrin River and soe up the RIver on both sides."[1]
1721 John Jernagen was on the Early Tax List in 1721, Chowan County.[5]
1722 Assignment from Robert Hicks to John Jornigan on Cattawaski Meadows in Chowan County; 6 August 1719 Patent for 600 acres, deed dated 17 July 1722. Wit: James Wood, Wm Badham.[2][6]
1723 "Jon Jernigan to John Williams, both of Nansemond Co., Va. 100 acres part of patent to said Jernigan on Wolf Pit Branch adj. land of Thomas Jernigan. (Note: This refers to land in Chowan Co., N.C.)"[2]
1734 John's will, dated 10 January 1733/34, was proved at the following February term of the Bertie Precinct Court; his wife Temperance survived him and was executrix of the will.[1]
1734 22 May 1734 inventory of John Jernagan's estate taken by Col. Benj Hill and Samuel Wheatby filed in Bertie Precinct Court.
