Peter married Helen Magnus Wald in Hackney, South Australia on 2 May 1942.The following report of the marriage was published in the South Australian newspaper, The Mail, on 2 May 1942:[2]

AT St. Peter's College Chapel, this afternoon, the Rev. Guy Pentreafh officiated at the marriage of Helen Magnus Wald, the only child of Mrs. C.I.Wald of Buxton street. North Adelaide, and the late Mr. Magnus Wald with Capt. Peter Gerald Jay (A.M.F.), the younger son of Dr. and Mrs. Hubert Jay of Burnside. Helen, who was given away by her cousin, Mr. Irvine Wald chose a gown of magnolia self -patterned satin, charming in its simplicity. She carried a bouquet of roses and tuberoses, and her full tulle veil fell from a coronet of tuberoses. She was attended by Betty Bagot. who contrasted her frock and turban of ice blue crepe with a bouquet of deep red roses. Capt. John Stokes was best man. After the ceremony Mrs. Wald invited relatives and a few friends to drink the health of the bride and groom.

Peter served in the Australian Army during the Second World War. He enlisted in Narellan, New South Wales on 21 August 1942, and was discharged on 16 April 1947 with the rank of captain in the 10th 48th Australian Infantry Battalion.[3]
