Biography

Michael was born about 1777. He was Christened on 13 July 1777 at St Mary, Hitchin in Hertfordshire. In the baptism register his parents are given as John Jeeves, a bricklayer, and Ann.^[1]

Michael Jeeves, son of John Jeeves (a bricklayer), was apprenticed to William Ball, tailor of Hitchin, on 1 March 1793. The witnesses to the indenture committing Michael to the apprenticeship were John Boffey and Thomas Jeeves.^[2]

Michael's father, John Jeeves, died in 1803, and left Michael the sum of £30 in his will that had been written the previous year on 15 March 1802.^[3]

Cited as a bachelor from Hitchin, he married Sarah Cawdell, a spinster from Hitchin, on 5 May 1800 at St Mary, Hitchin, Hertfordshire. Unusually there were four witnesses noted in the marriage register (there are normally only two) and they were: John Cawdell; Mary Smith; Jane Ball; and Alice Jeeves.^[4]

Michael Jeeves was buried, aged 33, on 6 May 1810 at St Mary, Hitchin. There is a note in the burial register: taylor (sic).^[5]
