Biography

In a hand written note by my great aunt, Elthelyn Jeffrey Bishoff

He was of medium build, blue eyes, dark hair. (sounds similar to my father)Was a foreman for Lincoln Motor Corp. (on Sept. 12 1918). Previously he was a farmer. According to a letter from his youngest daughter, he had a hard time holding down a job and left the family when child #5 came along, drifting back now and then. He was an alcoholic, who enjoyed riding the rails around the country, faking being deaf and mute to acquire what he needed along the way."

He was still alive when I was very young, however he was not involved very much with his family at that point. He was living in Florida when he passed away in 1953. I don't have an exact death date nor a place of burial. I do know that my grandfather (Oliver's son) didn't hear about Oliver's death until long after it occurred. I know Oliver had some contact with some of his children late in life, as there have been photos of him visiting in Detroit, probably in the same year he passed away.[1]

Footnotes

I noticed via marriage documents to Alice, that Alice was Oliver's second marriage. I do not have a record of his first marriage yet.

When researching what I have on Oliver's birth place, I note that Morocco is across the state border in Indiana. Not far from Beaverville. There is references to Beaverville (Ill) and I believe they had a farm or worked a farm there at that time. He was married and at least one if not more of the children were born there. They later moved to Michigan, where they had a farm in Denver Township near Hesperia, County of Newaygo. This was were my grandfather was born. The youngest child to Oliver and Alice was born in Detroit. This would have been around the time Oliver left the family and I believe that Alice made the journey to Detroit on her own, with the kids in tow and probably the last born on the way. I do know they were very poor and she struggled to make ends meet when first arriving in Detroit. She was said to create miracles with potatoes as their only staple.

Oliver is the beginning of my black hole as far at this family line. I can't find anything beyond his father and mothers names and this has been confirmed by older cousins who have keep family records. It ends with them...with only a few small clues. Mothers last name was Davis though the marriage record shows Daws which I think was a miss interpretation of the handwriting in the census document. I can see it as Davis. I know the family refereed to here as Sarah Jane, though I can only find records that point to Jane Sarah. She was born in Maine. There is a note from a now deceased family member that has her father listed as a sea captain, Allen Davis (???)

Names to consider for searches in this line are Jeffrey, Jeffery and Jeffries
