Biography

1863 May 4 Zidsel Marie Jensen was born to Maren Marie Jensen All records after this reflect this name spelled as "Sidsel".

Her middle name has been seen on many records as "Ecelia", a conundrum. [Nov 2023 - Trinity Lutheran Church records have been found that list 1912 baptism for GM Luella "Cecilie" Redpath, as well as death records for both 2ndGGM Marie "Cecelia" Petersen and her dau Dora "Cecelia"]. GGM Martha Marie Redpath gave HER daughter, Luella, the middle name of "Cecelia" which has been misspelled as "Cocelia" for years...) I believe "Cecelia" is a middle name that my 2ndGGM Marie chose to take when she came to the US, and has been handed down twice, but misspelled and mispronounced again and again, until no one was sure about it.

Her married surname of "Frank Pedersen" has been a huge puzzler for many. It is derived from her husband's father's name "Niels Frank Pedersen". All of their children carried this odd combo as their surname...some began to drop the "Frank", and by the next generation, it was gone all together.

1888 birth/christening of son Niels Kristian Frank Pedersen...lists mother as "Sidsel Marie Jensen from Englesholm".

Find-A-Grave profile created by JB Mogren, gives her birth place as Egholt, Kolding kommune, Syddanmark, Denmark...he was hired by Trinity Lutheran church in Kenmare, ND to create an English record from the Danish records they have. (JB Mogren states her death certificate says "Marie C Peterson".) From the church's info and his own research, he interprets that Marie's mother, Maren Marie Jensen was unwed, her bio father was Peder Pedersen Møller of Herslev , her step father was Ander "Andrew" Rasmussen, also buried in same cemetery in ND. [Nov 2023 More research on Moller to come.]

Danish emigration ID code: D8991O0206 Kontrakt nr: 260400 2 Sep 1891 immigrated from Copenhagen 1891 via SS Hekla. Her husband Jens and first 3 of her children were also aboard, Martha Marie was just a baby.

The family lived, and grew to 9 children, in a small Danish community in Renville County, ND.

1923 Mar 6 son Oscar died at 23yo in Hutchinson, MN. (COD was redacted from death cert by Ancestry.) Minnesota's worst known encounter with smallpox came in 1924 and 1925. Five hundred people died. (uncertain if this was his actual cause of death)

During the influenza epidemic of 1928-1929, 21% of the cases resulted in death due to complications of pneumonia...aka "the grippe". The Petersen's community was not immune to the devastating effects of this rampant virus.

1928 Oct 4 son Harlowe died at 30yo in Baden, Ward Co, ND.
