William was the son of Peter Jett and Julia Ann Harley Arnold. He married Susan E. Gresham in 1871, in Franklin County, Kentucky. Susan and William were the parents of seven known children, with only three living to adulthood.
Judge Jett, as he was known locally, was a very prominent lawyer and judge in Franklin County, Kentucky. Through his mother, he was a great-grandson of Captain William McBride, who was killed in the Battle of the Blue Licks, and Martha Lapsley.
