Note: The profiles on FamilySearch.org for members of this family have an unusually high number of sources, many of which are not primary sources. They also have an unusually high number of changes, which suggests discrepancies in data that requires repeated edits. These people appear to suffer from too much information and no guiding authority of proof. Therefore caution is advised in using and changing the data preserved here. As this profile develops using reliable sources and proper methods, it should help to weed out the unreliable sources and the faulty information. I invite all contributors to help us reach that goal.[1]
Catherine John was born about 1778 in either Frederick county, Maryland[2] or in Loudon county, Virginia. Her parents were Thomas John (1742-1778) and Ruth Evans (1746-??). It appears that she may have had a brother, David 1770, and three possible sisters; Sarah 1772-1837, Elizabeth 1774-1774 and Hannah 1776.[3]

Her husband died in the Hahn's Mill massacre on 30 October 1838. Her son, James, wrote in his biography many details of the family's experience during and after this tragic event, including their escape to Nauvoo.[10] Her grand-daughter, Martha Green Wachs, wrote a biography of the Green family and mentions that Catherine's daughter, Rebecca, paid her parents a visit shortly before they left for the west and never saw them again. Martha makes no mention of the tragedy, so it may be possible that Rebecca never knew anything of her parents' experience.[11]
Catherine died on 27 July 1841 in Nauvoo of Hancock county in Illinois of "King's Evil" (tuberculosis). Her body was buried in the Old Nauvoo Burial Grounds.[12]
