Biography
The son of Richard Johnson and his second wife, [[Wafer-368|Martha (Wafer) Johnson, Bess Johnson was born in Groesbeck, Texas[citation needed] in 1902, residing there with his family.[1][2]
Bess married Ida (Hobbs) Parsley, marrying in Ellis County, Texas on September 8, 1923[3] and having four children together:
Mary Elizabeth Johnson (1924-1988)
Nellie M. Johnson (1927-)
Bess Burl Johnson, Jr. (1929-)
Betty Joyce Johnson (1931-2012)
In 1930, Bess and his family lived in Montgomery County, Texas, residing in Justice Precinct 7[4] where he farmed on his own account. He registered for the World War Ii draft on February 16, 1942, registering in Houston, Texas.[5] He said that he worked for Nelson Ice Company and was described as 5'8" tall and 132 pounds red hair and blue eyes. Having registered in the "old man's draft," did not enlist. Bess and Ida later divorced.
Bess Johnson passed away in Houston, Texas[6] at the age of 50. He is buried at Willis Cemetery in Willis, Texas.[7]
