Elizabeth Johnson was born in Goochland County, Virginia (became Albemarle Co., in 1744), in 1738. She was the daughter of John Johnson, b. ca. 1710 and his wife, Elinor (Eleanor) Davis, b. ca. 1715, both most-likely in New Kent County, Virginia. At least one family genealogy says she had 2 younger sisters: Frances Johnson, b. Nov. 1750 and Mary Johnson, b. ca. 1752; their father is said to have died in Orange Co., Virginia, ca. 1755.[1]
Elizabeth Johnson married Frost and Snow (Sr.) in 1758 in Albemarle County, Virginia. They had 13 children:
The exact date and place of Elizabeth (Johnson) Snow's death and burial remain controversial (more research is needed). The most-plausible version, fitting other known facts about the life of her husband, Frost & Snow, Sr., is that Elizabeth died in 1782, likely due to complications from the birth of her youngest child, Hayland Snow, when she would have been about 44 years old. This puts her death in Albemarle County, Virginia, where Hayland was born, but no death or burial record has been found.
Some family genealogies state that Elizabeth (Johnson) Snow died "before August 1822" in Surry County, North Carolina, where Frost & Snow Sr., and family, homesteaded around 1785, leaving Albemarle County, Virginia. The land they settled was disputed between Grayson Co., Virginia, and Surry County, NC for years, being assigned to Surry Co., North Carolina circa 1812 but finally being located in Carroll County, Virginia, in 1842.[2] Frost & Snow Sr., died on his farm in 1813, then considered to be in Surry Co., NC, USA. He was 71 years old.
Most family genealogies also state that Elizabeth's husband, Frost & Snow Sr., re-married on April 17, 1783, in Fredricksville Parish, Albemarle Co., Virginia. His second wife was Elizabeth "Betsy" Ballard, b. ca. 1765 in Albemarle County. According to descendant Bee Snow, she had no children with Frost & Snow Sr. The Snow family left Virginia for Surry County, North Carolina, joining Frost Sr.'s oldest son, Frost & Snow, Jr., who had already homesteaded the western North Carolina Appalachian foothills about 1780. Frost & Snow Sr. left his Virginia farm to his son, Richard Snow, who did not move south.[3]
