Biography

Cornelius Johnson was baptized as Cornelis on 20 Apr 1703 in the Dutch Reformed Church at Port Richmond, Staten Island, New York. His father is named as Jacob Wouters. Mother not given. Wits. Thomas Sutten or Lutten and Susanna Du Secoy.^[1][2] The surname as Johnson with the lineage back to one Jan Wouter van der Bosch is explained in The Coolbaugh family in America, from their earliest appearance at New Amsterdam, 1686-1938 in North American Family Histories. ^[3]

His first three children were also baptized in the same Dutch Reformed Church, and their mother was listed as Sara(h) Manbrut. Thus we know the name of his first wife. ^[4]

In his will written 5 March 1770, Kingwood, Hunterdon Co., NJ, Cornelius named wife Ann; sons Jacobus, Cornelius, and Joseph; daughters Sara, Elizabeth, Mary, Rachel, Ann, Winifret, Johanna, and Rebecca; and grandson William.  A stipulation to the will was that his estate was to be sold in one year.  Executors: sons Jacobus and Cornelius.  Witnesses: James Stout, Jacobus Johnson, Benjamin Johnson.  The will was probated 27 April 1770.^[5] In this will he names his wife as Ann. One of the witnesses was James Stout, who was married to Johanna Johnson, a sister of Cornelius Johnson. James Stout had a sister Ann who is purported to be the second wife of Cornelius Johnson and mother of Elizabeth Johnson. ^[6]
