Biography

The birth of John Johnston, son of Alexander and Mary Ann (Smith) Johnston was registered in February 1869. His father's occupation was recorded as Coach Maker.^[1] He would have grown up in Belfast.

John has been located in electoral rolls for Nelson New Zealand from 1922. ^[2]

John died in Nelson on 23 February 1940. ^[3] JOHNSTON--On 23rd February, 1940, at Nelson, John, brother of Robert Johnston, 392 Hardy Street, Nelson. -- Private interment.^[4] He is buried at Wakapuaka Cemetery, Nelson.

In his Will, John, described as Retired Bookeeper, named and left legacies to his brother Robert (of Nelson), his nephew Alexander S. Johnston, and his sister Margaret S. Johnston (Maggie) who was to use the legacy for her own and/or her sisters' interests. Among the assets left were "...sections in Alberta in the city of Edmonton..."^[5]
