Biography

Agness (Johnston) Kerr was born in Scotland.

Agness Johnstone was born in October, 1803 in Lochmaben, Dumfriesshire, Scotland and baptized on October 23rd.^[1][2] She was the daughter of Mungo Johnston and Isobel Carruthers.^[1] In 1825, she married John Kerr in the Parish of Lochmaben, in Dumfriesshire.^[3]

John and Agness lived together on Raemoor (a.k.a. Raemuir) ^[4] farm where John was a farmer of around 120 acres. Raemoor farm was located in Torthorwald parish^[5], right on the boundry with Lochmaben where Agness was born. John and Agness held residence here for at least 20 years between 1841 and 1861.^{[6][7][8][9][10]} Agness worked as a farmer's wife and was aided by her children who also helped work the farm.^[8]

Agness died of pneumonia on the 21st of June, 1869 at the age of 65, in the village of Collin within the parish of Torthorwald where she had spent most of her life.^[12] She left behind her husband, John, who died a few years later in 1872.^[13]

Research Notes

• Agness' birth record shows her last name spelled as "Johnston" and her father and siblings also have documentation with this spelling. However, it appears that Agness started using the spelling of "Johnstone" at some point in her life. The earliest usage of Johnstone can be seen on her marriage record to John Kerr in 1825.
