Born on the farm of Bakki in Öxnadalur on Feb. 8, 1852, Sigtryggur was provided with a good upbringing and home education by his parents, Jónas Sigurðsson and Helga Egilsdóttir[1][2] He immigrated to Canada, first to Quebec City in 1872,[2] and later on to present-day Gimli, Manitoba, where he founded the settlement New Iceland.
Jonasson was the MLA for St. Andrews from 1896 to 1899[3] and the MLA for Gimli (with the Liberal Party) from 1908-1910.[4]
He died in Arborg, Manitoba, on 27 or 28 November 1942.[5][6] (His death registration gives a date of 27 November, while all memorials and articles give the date as 28 November.)
