Biography

Joseph Wakefield Jones was born 3 Jan 1863 in Scotland, Van Buren, Arkansas. He was the son of Thomas Hicks Jones, Sr and Deliah Cassandra Cotham.

1870 U.S. Census Thomas Hicks Jones (age 33) and his wife Delila (age 32) are living in Liberty Township, Van Buren, Arkansas with their sons William A (age 15), George W (age 12), James C (age 10), Alford D (age 8), Benjamin (age 7), and Joseph W. (age 5). Thomas, Delilah, William, George, and James were born in Tennessee. Alford, Benjamin, and Joseph were born in Arkansas. Thomas is a physician. Personal Estate value: $400. [1]

In 1880 Thomas H Jones (age 50) and his wife Delila (age 47) are living in Craig Township, Van Buren, Arkansas with their children: James C (age 22), Benjamin F (age 19), Joseph W (age 16), Andrew (age 9), Thomas (age 3), and Rosanna (age 1). Also in the home is James's wife Elizabeth Jones (age 17, listed as son's wife). Thomas and Delila were born in Tennessee. The others were all born in Arkansas. Thomas is a farmer, Delilah is keeping house, James is a merchant, Benjamin and Joseph are working on the farm. [2]

25 Dec 1889 Joseph W Jones (age 27) married Sarah Leonia McElwee (age 20) in Van Buren County, Arkansas.[3] [4][5]

Children:

Sarah Leonia McElwee Jones passed away at age 28 on 7 Nov 1898 and is buried in Green Hill Cemetery in Davis, Murray, Oklahoma. [6]

Joseph W Jones married Celia Mae "Cely" Patterson in April 1903 in Davis, Oklahoma.

Children:

1910 census Dr. Joseph W Jones (age 47) is living in Atascosa, Texas with wife Celia (age 37) and their children: Ella G (age 5), Delila M (age 4), Stella L (age 2) and Joseph W Jones Jr (age 0). Also in the home is Joseph's son from his previous marriage, Bryan (age 12), and Celia's daughter from previous marriage Jessie Nix (age 16). Joseph Sr and Bryan were born in Arkansas. All others were born in Texas. Bryan and Jessie are attending school. Joseph is a physician.[7]

Celia passed away 29 June 1915 in Stockdale, Wilson, Texas. She is buried in Stockdale Cemetery in Stockdale, Texas.[8]

1920 census Dr. Joseph Jones (widower, age 56) is living in Wilson County, Texas with his children: Bryan (age 19), Gertrude (age 16), Lila May (age 14), Stella (misspelled Settla, age 12), J W (age 9), and Fred P. Jones (age 6). Joseph was born in Arkansas. All the others were born in Texas. The children all attended school. Joseph is a family doctor.[9]

1930 census Joseph Wakefield Jones (widower, age 67) is living in Medina, Texas with his son Fred P. Jones (age 17) and his daughter Gertrude (age 25). Also in home is Gertrude's husband R.L. Gibbons (age 28) and their children: Grace E (age 6), Gladyne C (age 4), and Celeste M (age 2). The home is rented. R.L. and Joseph were born in Arkansas. All the others were born in Texas. Joseph is a general practice physician. Fred is a laborer at odd jobs. R.L. is a radio salesman. [10]

Dr. Joseph W Jones passed away 8 Jan 1933 at age 70 in Stockdale, Wilson, Texas [11] He is buried in Stockdale Cemetery in Stockdale, Texas.[12]
