Biography

Katie was born about 1871 in England. ^[1]

Katie married William Barkell Martin on 3 July 1901 at S. Luke's Church, Howick, Natal, South Africa, in the Parish of Karkloof. She was the second wife of William who was divorced from his first wife.^[2]

Katie and William had at least two children:

• Janie Maud Barkell Martin, born 1902
• Florence Natalie Barkell Martin, born 1905^[3]

Katie died on 25 November 1935, a widow aged 64, at School Lane, Malvern, Durban. Cause of death was given as carcinoma of sigmoid colon and burial at Mountain Rise Cemetery, Pietermaritzburg.^[1]

Research Notes

Katie's death registration recorded her birth estimated as 1871 in England. Her parents are unknown so her mother's maiden name is not known. The General Record Office (GRO) for England and Wales only shows two people named Catherine Maud Jones having been born in the period 1867-1875. Both were born in 1874, both in Wales:

• Catherine Maud Jones, mother's maiden name Jones, born at Merthyr Tydfil.^[4]
• Catherine Maud Jones, mother's maiden name Mason, born at Cardigan.^[5]
