Biography

John Jones 1828 – c.1896 John Jenkin Jones was born in Ystradfellte, Brecknockshire. The date varies between Censuses, from 1824, 1828 to 1831.

By the age of 30 he is married to Gwenllian, who is also from Ystradfellte. They are living at 1 Saddler`s Row, Aberdare and John has work as a coal miner. They also have their two eldest children, Mary (b.1853) and Howell (b.1856).

By 1871 they have a new son, Jenkin (b.1866) and they are living in the Mount Pleasant Inn, Trecynon, Aberdare. John is still a miner, but he is also running the public house. Mary has given birth to a daughter, Gwenllian (b. 1870) and married coal miner Thomas Harris from Ystradgynlais. They are lodging at the pub too. The baby is on the Census of 1871, but possibly died around the same time.

John is widowed around 1873 and his daughter has another child, Catherine, in 1875. Sometime between 1875 and 1881 the family moved from Aberdare to Tonypandy in order to work in the pits there, but Thomas is no longer with them in 1881. At that time, John was living at 9 Court St., Tonypandy, under the same roof as his two sons, his daughter and her second daughter.

In 1883 Mary re-marries, this time to George Vaughan from Ambleston in Pembrokeshire and he also joins the household. John`s grandson William John Vaughan is born in 1884 and the family move down the road to 8 Court St. By 1891 John has moved across the corner to 8 Court St. and is living with his daughter`s family and his son Howell.

John died on February 11th, 1892, in Tonypandy. His GRO Death Certificate reads: "280 / Feb. 11th 1892, 8 Court St., Tonypandy, Ystradyfodwg U.S.D. / John Jenkin Jones / Male / 63 yrs / Timberman / Compound fracture of leg accidentally caused by a fall on the roadway on Jan. 1st 1892 / Certificate received fro Rees Jenkin Rhys Coroner for Glamorgan. Inquest held Feb. 12th 1892 / Fifteenth February 1892 / Geo. Williams, Registrar."

John Jenkin Jones was buried at Ystradfellte Cemetery on Monday the 15th of February, 1892. (Vaughan family Bible)

From the Rhondda Cynon Taf Library Service: "By the 1850's Heol-y-Felin had become one of the main population centres of Aberdare Parish. Much of Harriet Street had been built between 1830 -1860, Ebenezer Street during the 1840's and during the 1850's the houses of Alma Street, Mount Pleasant Street and Margaret Street amongst others were constructed. In 1853 Thomas Webster Rammell was sent by the general Board of Health to conduct an inspection of public health in Aberdare. His report states that whilst drainage conditions in Heol-y-Felin were better than other districts, there were areas of concern: Rev. John Griffith, Vicar of Aberdare, reported that;

"There is not, to my knowledge, a place in Aberdare more filthy than the neighbourhood of the Royal Oak in the same quarter of the town. Mill-Street proper is in a very bad state from the ash-heaps of rubbish and filth thrown into and lying on the centre of the road."

Rees Hopkin Rhys reported;

"Many of the houses in this quarter are of a very inferior description, and these have no privy accommodation whatever. The new houses, here, as a rule, have one privy for two houses."

Other information which may or may not be related to this John Jenkin Jones: On the Census of 1851 there is a John Jones working as a collier, 18 years old from Ystradfellte, living in Mill St.,which was the main road of Trecynon in those days and next to Mount Pleasant. There is also a Gwenllian Rees from Ystradfellte working on Cwm Wenol Farm in Aberdare at the same time. Also, in 1854 a marriage was registered in Merthyr Tydfil area between a John Jones and a Gwenllian Rees.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
