Biography
John is said to have been born in Southbridge, Massachusetts, on May 27, 1814, to Elias Joy and Mary Wakefield. There is a lengthy extract from a published genealogy on his FamilySearch profile, but without a citation. No source was found to confidently identify his date of birth or parents, though he did name two children Elias and Mary.
He married first Elmina Blood, daughter of Jacob Blood and Phoebe Eddy, on March 31, 1839.[1] They had four known children:[2]
1840-1897: Emily L. (born in Connecticut), m. Calvin Wires, <1859
1842-1862: John Tyson (born in Massachusetts), died at war
1847-1891: Elmina (born in Canada), m. Levinus Jackson, <1871
1850->1900: Fannie Maria (born in New York), m. James Riddle, 1873
By 1850, the family had settled at Potsdam, New York, near much of Elmina's family. Sadly she died soon after, on January 1 1851.[3] She was buried there at West Potsdam Cemetery.
John possibly remarried to a Sarah, maiden name unknown, but they had no known children. John remarried in 1863 to Elsie Mack, daughter of the Rev. Horace Mack and Lucy Pierce, and widow of Joseph Fearnly. John and Elsie had three known children:[4][5]
1865-1945: Henry T. (born in Ohio), m. Mary Jackson, 1897
1868-1939: Frederick Elias (born in Ohio), m. 1st Etta Eckley, 1898; m. 2nd Chloe Jacobs, 1912
1873-1949: Amos Blood (born in Ohio), m. Maud Sarah Chapman, 1897
John passed on March 12, 1899, in Pioneer, Ohio, and is buried there at Floral Grove Cemetery.[6] Elsie remarried to Thomas Reader, and lived another sixteen years. She died in Williams, Ohio, on March 18, 1915, and is buried at Floral Grove Cemetery with John.[7][8]
