Luke was born about 1808 in Sussex, England, the son of Thomas and Leah Joyes.[1] He married Hannah Dennett on May 19, 1834, in Itchingfield, Sussex.[2]
They emigrated to Upper Canada (now Ontario) as part of the Petworth Immigration Scheme.[3] They left England from Portsmouth in April 1836 aboard the "Heber."[4]
In 1861 Luke worked as a farm labourer in Westminster Township, Middlesex County. He lived with his wife Susanna (Hannah?) and nine children.[5]
